Edina Dance Team Will Keep Its Name | Schools
Title (Max 100 Characters)
The fall dance team at Edina High School will get to keep its name after spirited protests by current and former students.
Dancers, their families and school alumni had protested a proposal to change the team's name from Hornettes to Hornets, a change school officials said would promote school unity and consistency. The rest of the school's teams are called the Hornets.
Now school officials say the Hornettes will get to keep their name, a move that is "in the best interests of our students and our school community," according to a news release.
The district does plan to implement a Spirit Squad for the 2012-13 school year. The squad will include the pep band, cheer squads, mascot, hip hop dance team, and fall and winter dance teams. Coaches and advisors for theses groups will meet May 3 to develop a plan for spirit activities occurring during the fall and winter seasons.
The district intends to review the Spirit Squad after next year's fall and winter seasons.
